2017 Holiday Recital Review

Wednesday, December 20, 2017 by Ron Ferlito | RFM Studio News!

 Hello parents, students and volunteers!

I want to thank all of you for helping to make the recital programs this past Saturday such a wonderful event!  Everyone performed beautifully and as always I was amazed at how hard everyone worked to do their very best. The collective advancement of everyone in their musical education and experience concentrated into a single day is staggering!

Always Looking Ahead

As everyone takes a well deserved break from music lessons this week to focus on family, friends, and preparations for the big holiday season, I am already looking forward to the next recital scheduled for the Saturday before Mother’s Day - May 12, 2018. There may also be an additional program added the Friday evening before, on May 11. (More details concerning that below).

Just as the military conducts an “AFR” (After Action Report), it is beneficial to assess what went well and what areas can be improved upon after an event like this. There are three primary aspects of the next recital we are already considering making adjustments to in order to continually upgrade the experience: scheduling adjustments, technical improvements, and the possible addition of a grand piano. I will address all three of these areas

Scheduling Adjustments

First, now that the time restrictions we had to comply with at our previous recital location are no longer a factor, we will be starting both programs earlier in the day with a larger gap of time between them.  The two Saturday programs will start at 11AM and 2PM. This means there will be less chance of the earlier program delaying the start of the later one and it will also give all guests more time to attend other evening functions after the recital. This will be especially helpful for my East Valley remote students who have a long car ride after the event.

Technical Considerations

The second area of improvement will be a greatly simplified and thus much smoother sound and technical setup. Without getting too nerdy in this discussion, I will just say that even if we continue to use the same electronic keyboard in the next recital, it will not be piped through the large church sound system but only heard through its own speakers and my small stage monitor as we had it configured for the 3 PM program Saturday. This will avoid the potential for unwanted heavy bass sounds and an increased unnatural playing experience for the participants like we had in the earlier program. I will also use simplified microphone, mixing, and video configurations in order to facilitate smoother transitions and better pacing. In addition, we inadvertently sent the live video feed to my personal Facebook page instead of my business page where the links were pointing. This has never happened before, will not happen again, and has been corrected so that the recordings of both programs from Saturday are now posted on the business page where all the links have been directing everyone for weeks

Grand Piano Possibilities

Lastly, we are considering providing an acoustic grand piano for all or some of the future programs, which will create additional expense to either have one brought to our current facility for the day, or to rent a different facility that already has a grand piano. Either option would add significantly to the cost of the programs which would have to be offset by either an admission charge for all or some guests (as most Music studios do), or a participation surcharge only for those choosing the grand piano option.

By adding an additional program at a location with a grand piano, it could also solve the problem of our ever expanding size (and length of each program) by creating a third event at a different location (perhaps closer to our East Valkey Participants) for those wanting the grand piano experience. In order to help us how to decide to better serve you, please take a moment to complete the brief survey included in the “save the date” e-vite invitation just sent to your emails. There is also a link to the invitation and survey provided for your convenience below (the survey is located just below the first page on the invitation with the red RFM logo. Just scroll down past the host message).
Thank you again for all your interest and enthusiastic support. It is such a pleasure and honor to be able to serve you! I will see you all soon, and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Holiday Season!
